If the complexity of life is proof of a Creator, who created the Creator?

A good question. Many theists commonly tell me that you "can't have something from nothing." But they violate their own rule when they say that god created something (the universe) from nothing. They also seemingly violate the rule when they say that God is eternal (and thus had no creator).
