What is the best caliber of handgun for self defense?

There is no such thing as a "best" cartridge. Whatever you can shoot most accurately under stress and with speed. A hit with a 9mm is better that a miss with a .44 Magnum. Really, all three you listed are very effective rounds, your marksmanship will be a much bigger variable than any slight ballistic differences in the rounds.
