What is an appropriate answer when you are asked if you are married?

i am divorced and get this question asked several times. i normally would tell am divorced, but i find the answer odd when i respond to people who i have just met or meet very rarely. for eg. an old clmate who i reconnected with after 15 years asked me. so should i tell that am single or am divorced - in particular if the person is of opposite and is showing a bit of interest. of course, i have no qualms in telling about my divorce status and no intentions of hiding that but when the person is not that close and wants to know you better what would be an appropriate reply?
